Army veteran Michael Stawrowski, from Bristol, is planning to undertake two long-distance treks to raise money for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity and The Royal Marines Charity. The first will be a 100-mile walk through the hills of Nepal and the second, separated only by the long flight back to the UK, will consist of a 150-mile trek from Land’s End in Cornwall to Norton Manor in Somerset, all the while carrying a 40lb ‘Bergen’. He aims to complete the UK leg of the challenge in just 10 days.
A 30-year military career saw Michael, now 60 years old, attached to all three branches of the Armed Forces (Army, Navy, RAF), finally retiring as a Sergeant Master Chef in the Royal Corps of Signals. He commented: “I want to give something back to the Armed Services, especially those injured or lost on operational tours. Unfortunately, I know what it’s like to lose colleagues, so these walks are the least I can do to help those dealing with the effects of service.”
Brigadier (Ret’d) Robin Bacon, Chief of Staff at ABF The Soldiers’ Charity adds: “Michael’s walk in Nepal will cover some arduous terrain, so to come back to the UK and carry on for a further 150 miles is no mean feat. We really commend Michael for undertaking this endeavour for the Charity. His support means we can continue our vital work helping soldiers and veterans and their families in need. The money raised will help to make a real difference to the quality of life for our brave and hardworking soldiers.”
