Former soldier and Poet-in-Residence Martin Figura has penned a poetry collection to mark our charity’s 75th anniversary and VJ Day 75.
Written over the course of our 75th anniversary year, Maps: A Poetry Collection for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity documents life in the British Army, as seen through the eyes of our ambassadors and beneficiaries.
Martin explained: “I was given the daunting responsibility of putting into words life-changing experiences that clearly merit poems. I’m better as a poet that I ever was at soldiering. I hope my poems are up to the job and convey the respect I felt in making them.”
Included in this special collection are poems dedicated to charity ambassadors, beneficiaries and friends Stewart Harris, Al Hodgson, Charles Louis, John Cutting, Rick Clement and Troy Conner.
“The ability to show courage and resourcefulness in the face of adversity sits at the very heart of soldiering. The poems in this collection traverse conflict and war; physical injury and mental illness; camaraderie and friendship; transition and recovery.”
– Major General (Ret’d) Martin Rutledge, Chief Executive
