Matt grew up in an Army family. He says: “I felt I was naturally suited to the Army”. He served in the Princess of Wales’ Royal Regiment (PWRR) for 17 years after joining in 2005, reaching the rank of Sergeant.

In 2009 Matt was awarded a Chief of Joint Operations Certificate of Commendation for an exceptional act of bravery, helping to save the lives of his Platoon. Unfortunately, Matt injured his ankle during the same conflict and despite continuing to progress in the Army, he was eventually medically discharged in 2022. The complications to his injury continued and in June 2023 he had to have a below left knee amputation.

Thanks to the donations of people like you, the Army Benevolent Fund was there to support Matt when he needed help. We contributed £1,000 towards the cost of an electric adjustable bed to improve his postural support and positioning following his operation.

“The bed has been amazing. It’s allowed me to elevate my feet every night to help with my recovery, while still sleeping next to my wife. One hundred percent, I think the bed has been one of the biggest things that has got me through this tough period.”

Matt is now working as a head mechanic at a local company in Hampshire and is enjoying being pain free for the first time in six years, spending his time with his wife, three children and two dogs.
