We are delighted to award Forces in the Community a £10,000 grant towards a new project helping veterans and their families to manage their wellbeing and find work.
Forces in the Community was formed in 2010 and works with local communities in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. It supports veterans in several areas, such as housing, employment, welfare and benefits applications, mental health counselling and reducing social isolation.
The charity also has a drop-in centre which focuses on engaging veterans with their local communities. In 2017, the drop-in centre was recognised with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service for its great work.
Our grant will go towards the costs of a new project run by Forces in the Community. It will focus on the unique situation of each individual, aiming to improve their wellbeing and mental health and prepare them for finding work. The project will include one-to-one therapy, group sessions, psycho-education, mental health training and activities with peer support.
Rick Harrington, Chief Executive of Forces in the Community, said: “Forces in the Community is once again extremely grateful to receive a generous grant from ABF The Soldiers’ Charity in support of our work with the veteran community. Over the last five years, we have experienced a significant increase in the need for mental health support. Our project for veterans and their family members will provide tailored support and counselling, free places on mental health training courses and increased engagement with local organisations – all with the overall aim of delivering sustainable and positive change.”
Robin Bacon, Chief of Staff at ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, said: “We are so pleased to support Forces in the Community and its project to help so many veterans improve their mental health and overall wellbeing. Being together and supporting each other is so important to any veteran and we look forward to seeing the great work of this charity in the future.”
