Sergeant James Nugent served with the Royal Engineers for the almost 14 years and has been a proud member of the Army family since he was just 16, having undertaken countless tours of Afghanistan. But it is his eight-year-old daughter, Elsie, who James would say is the really brave one.
Elsie, was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy when she was a just a baby. Elsie’s condition means she will need to use a wheelchair for the rest of her life. As Elsie grew, it became harder for her dad and step mum to care for her – and for Elsie to enjoy the quality of life she deserved.
James and his wife, Anouska were able to cope with looking after Elsie when she was very young but, as she grew up, lifting her became much more difficult. With the bathroom and bedroom upstairs, it was a struggle to look after her, and led to back injuries.
We provided much-needed funds for an extension to their house, mobility equipment and a ramp, so that Elsie has a safe and comfortable living space and the family can live together happily.
Sgt James Nugent enthused: “Words cannot put into context what this means to our family. Elsie now has her own space and independence, and we cannot thank you enough. This truly is life changing.”
Our soldiers already give so much on our behalf. Their families have their own unique challenges to overcome. But taking care of each other should never be something to sacrifice. We pledge to always be there for every member of our Army family.
