Major General Tim Hyams OBE, currently the Army’s Military Secretary (in charge of career management for 100,000 soldiers from Recruit to General) and the Army’s senior representative in Scotland, has been appointed as ABF The Soldiers’ Charity’s new Chief Executive – taking over the role from Martin Rutledge, who retires this autumn after nine years in the role.

The charity had an excellent and varied range of candidates; and trustees were delighted to select Tim. A cavalry officer, he joined the Army in 1986 and his wide-ranging career made him an ideal fit for this appointment. As a staff officer, many of his roles directly related to personnel policy and highly sensitive issues such as complaints, conditions of service and the care of the wounded, injured and sick. As a senior officer, he has led and managed very substantial organisations with both civilian and military workforces, with responsibility for sensitive, high profile programmes and commercial partnerships – often under intense political scrutiny.

Tim is Colonel, The Royal Dragoon Guards and Honorary Colonel, The Queen’s Own Yeomanry; Chairman of United Kingdom Armed Forces Rugby Football Union, and President of Royal Armoured Corps Sport. With experience as a trustee for a number of charities, he has also been a school governor. ABF The Soldiers’ Charity is thrilled to appoint a senior executive with not only impeccable military credentials but also wide-ranging experience of large-scale business and Whitehall issues. He will take up his appointment in early November.
